The Meaning Behind "Caritas"
Caritas (käriˌtäs), or agape, is selfless love in the sense of God's love for man and man's love for God. It is human compassion for one's neighbor. It is also one of the three theological virtues in the form of charity.
The mission of the Mystic Krewe of Caritas was founded to provide AIDS education to the community and financial support to Aids Service Organizations through fundraising and wish-list drives. Its main community fundraiser, a Mardi Gras Bal Masque, will be the primary fundraiser for financial donations from the community.
Through both leadership and stewardship the Mystic Krewe of Caritas supports AIDS Alabama and its clientele to gather financial and material resources in addition to providing AIDS education to the general community.
The Mystic Krewe of Caritas was founded in 2008 by Michael Acton, Rebecca Haack, and Robert Wade as a service organization to raise money for AIDS Alabama. During this time, the Ryan White governmental matching funding from the state was pulled, causing concern to all AIDS outreach facilities. MKC dedicates its bal ticket proceeds to AIDS Alabama for client services (housing, medicine, food, utilities, etc.) Over the years MKC has raised more than $50,000 for the organization.
As the Krewe has grown in size, so has its heart. Aside from raising money for AIDS Alabama, members have collected eyeglasses for OneSight, a global organization, and participated in events and fundraisers for Birmingham AIDS Outreach, as well as the BAO PAWS Program.
